Correct. Running non-plenum rated cable in a commercial HVAC supply
system is a serious problem. But running non-plenum rated cable a
residential air return duct is not a problem. As the temperature of the
duct will never be above that of the average room temperature, it is not
a safety problem. It is NOT a good idea to run a cable in a supply duct.
The temperature of the heated air near the furnace will exceed the
off-gas temperature of all non-plenum rated cable jackets. But If it is
necessary, Home Depot does carry the plenum-rated cable. And it is about
3x the cost of non-plenum cable. So $0.15/ft vs. $0.05/ft.
