Well Kevin, I'm stumped for now.  I will have to think out what the 
subnet mask means in CIDR notation.  It isn't burned in my memory how 
that parses out so doesn't make sense right off.  I see your point but 
must work thru the bits.  There really isn't an invisible counterpart to 
iptables that you've missed.  How about creating a second home network 
with one of your machines and hooking that with a crossover cable to 
your external NIC?  Then you could test without dealing with the 
Internet complication.  Netstat -an shows your open ports that you can 
contact the server and find a daemon listening.  "Telnet yourmachine 22" 
is a great way to test your SSH server from an external machine.
