Stability did not show up until 98SE. Then only with a bit of work.
Personal smoke alarm set to warn on outgoing, (on but silent in) unbind
all unneeded stuff in the NetBEUI, turn off ActiveX and Java. If Office
is installed, turn off Fast Find. Very important to keep all the spyware
crap out, and most important. Retrieve mail with *anything* other than
OE!
Got one here that is almost four years old without a reinstall, or any
serious repairs needed. Was in daily use as the family box for over two
years. Now only used by the one "ol' stick in the mud" who refuses to see
the light ;-) (smiley in case she reads this)
Something else I have long suspected as contributing to its stability, is
lack of patches. None, nada, zilch! Someone on /. recently confirmed
this... Clean install, stable, install patches, crashes. Also needs to
be a genuine 'Bloze disk. You will double your trouble with a system
restore disk.
Lest anyone be offended, the above is not an endorsement for Windows.
More of a summary of why this old hillbilly, who stays in the GUI 99.9%
of the time, switched to Mandrake.
