Samba is an open-source suite that provides access, name
resolution, service announcement and domain authentification
services between UNIX and Windows-based systems.
SMB (Server Message Block protocol) was originally developed by
Intel and Microsoft in the early 1980s and has been the core of
DOS and Windows file sharing ever since. It was later extended
with CIFS (Common Internet FileSystem). It works via NetBIOS,
which originated from IBM and runs on top of different networking
protocols, including DECnet, IPX/SPX, SNA and TCP/IP.
The following topics will be covered in depth: (1) how to obtain
and install Samba/CIFS, (2) what features are available in
Samba/CIFS, (3) what the common configurations are for
Samba/CIFS, (4) how to edit the configuration file manually, (5)
what automated configuration tools are available, (6) how to
troubleshoot common problems, (7) what security concerns arise
with SMB/CIFS, and (8) what upcoming changes to expect in Samba.

Prior to the meeting, there will be an informal, non-structured
"guru" session open to anyone wishing to attend. This will start
around 6:45pm in the meeting room, and we will have one or more
gurus available to discuss whatever topics/problems/questions the
attendees care to bring up.

UNIX community, these firms, both large and small, have made a
commitment to provide financial assistance for defraying the
operating expenses of AUUG. We are both pleased and grateful for
their sponsorship, and hope that they will continue to support AUUG
in the days to come.

For those who need some sustenance before the meeting, you will
find kindred AUUG spirits at "Fuddruckers" restaurant (240
Perimeter Center Pkwy) on Hammond Drive across from Perimeter Mall
and not far from the Hewlett-Packard building. Drop in any time
after 5:30pm to sit around and chew the fat and indulge in some of
the Fuddruckers cuisine. This is a chance for folks to get
together and exchange rumors, ideas, assistance, etc.
