You can use NView to do the clone setup or the single desktop stretched across two monitors using NView the binary Nvidia drivers. However it sounds like you where asking about multiple desktops via a single dual head card(the i8000 series has this with the Nvidia cards). I am not to sure if KDE and Gnome support this, I use Enlightenment which works great like this, but you can check out my XF86Config-4 file below. To get the pci busid you can use the XFree86 command with the -scanpci option (do not have X running).
