I started out using Gnome, but when I used Gnome on Red Hat c. 1999-2000 there
was this nasty bug that made the CD drive go dead to the world for a few seconds
every few seconds when doing transfers from it.  I switched to KDE and the
problem went away.

So, this was basically an aggravated comfort-level issue.
