[ale] network intermittently going down, HUH ?

Do you just have the one Debian box which requires a network stop?  If
it's only the one, can you send me the output of a "ifconfig -a" "ip
route" and "arp -a" the next time it goes down?

You may alwo want to up grade to the latest 2.4.22-rc kernel.
