finally found it:
(soundcard and midi-out was working, but midi in was not.  The 
following just gives a memory address to MPU400?)
1. YaST2 Modules -> Hardware -> Sound2. select soundcard 
(may already be selected)3. click the "options" button4. select the 
"MPU400..." item5. click on the "Possible Value" dropdown menu toward the 
bottom of the window , and select an appropriate memory address6. click 
on the "Set" button7. click on the "Next" button8. click "Yes" to 
restart sound services9. click on the "Finish" button
 
or
 
edit modules.conf witht he MPU400 address and restart sound services.
