OpenBSD with its security focus has been more suitable for server and
firewall use, but since 3.0-ish it's been a bit more useable as a
desktop. The ports collection while still not the size of FreeBSD's
has most of what you'd want for a desktop system.
I still run RH9 for my desktop, but that's because it's a laptop (and
even then I've got stuff that doesn't work :/, but anyhow). Otherwise
I'd certainly give OpenBSD (or Net- for that matter) a look.
