I have been wanting to do the same thing, get my router's 
dhcp address and send a message to my phone when it 
changes.

The external interface ain't gonna show up in a traceroute 
and no event is registered.  The only was I see to do it 
at the moment is to fetch the status screen thru http and 
parse it out of that output.
