[ale] editing binary file with perl

Ahh...wait.

printf would try to make "%c" a formatted string right?  Not what I'm
looking for.  print seems to work better, althought the copy seems to fail
about 50 chars into the file.

Anyone know how to debug/view errors returned from low level file reads in
perl?
