About the only thing I can tell you after nearly a year with
Mindspring/Earthlink DSL service is that they insist on using
PPPOE and when you say Linux, the eyes of the first-level
phone techs roll back inside their heads. If it aint Winbloze,
they haven't a clue. As far as I know they do not restrict
any specific ports, and their service plays well with my
Linksys router/DSL bridge. About the only time their tech
support couldn't help me was when the problem turned out to be
a sorta short on the Bell South phone line -- not enough to
screw up the telephone service, but enough to take down the
DSL. Bell South wasn't in any hurry to play nice with one of
Mindspring's customers, but . . . let's just say I can be
firmly persistent about pushing my way to higher levels of
customer service. I was going through withdrawal (from my
DSL connection) and my sense of humor was as shorted out as
my phone line.
