[ale] Keyboard problems with X?

Thank you charles for posting for me.  I have solved my problem through the 
process of "screwing around with the system until it starts working".  I 
ended up moving the HD from one machine to another where it started working.  
Then I moved it back and all was well.

Life is strange,
