(I am replying from work with mindsprings webmail utility so if the formatting
sucks, sorry...)

It seems like your having a bit of bad luck with linux...

I would go back and check to make sure your hotplug daemon is loading the
correct modules. You should have the usb_storage module loaded for that
adapter to function properly (IIRC) and once thats loaded it should show up as
a scsi drive (/dev/sda if you do not have any other scsi HDD's in your
system).

Check your dmesg output for any error or warning messages about unknown usb
devices being found, usually that means the device is "weird" in some way and
is not 100% compliant with the usb storage spec, or the driver does not know
what to do with its vendor/id code. If there are any messages, report them
back to the list. If you want any help fixing the problem, we will need all
the info we can get on that problem :P

I also have a flash card based (in my case Compact Flash) digital camera, and
I use it (exclusivly) in linux. But in my case it worked out of the box, and
I had the opposite problem you are having (it works in linux out of the box,
but if I wanted it to work in Win98, I would have to install a driver). I do
not know why it worked in windows for you out of the box, as I do not think
windows98 supports 100% ofthe USB storage devices, but I know Linux does (well
almost 100%). IIRC it even creates a mount point for me, and in Gnome I can
access it from GMC.

Just so you know I have never had anywhere near as many problems as you are
having with Linux, and thats over more then 5 years of using it. Maybe I am
just more careful in my hardware selection? (Doubtfull, as I rarely look at
any compatibility guides, unless I am buying something exotic) Maybe I am
more knowledgeable in some way then you are about linux? (Very possible as I
have written and fixed Linux device drivers before, including adding USB
storage support for a USB floppy drive, but that was a 1 line change...) I do
not know why your having so many problems, maybe its the microsoft gods
jinxing you :P

Mike
