Grasping at straws: 
I had a new board which I was convinced was defective (random lockups)
and after much discussion, the shop let me try a new power supply. 
Voila, it works fine, even though the old supply was adequately rated, and 
only 6 months old. Apparently it had something to do with the stability or 
regulation of the 12 volt part.

Maybe it's worth a try.
