[ale] those of you reading this while within US jurisdiction should have a care....

I read in August (I think it was in FORTUNE) how the Sec. of the Treasury
thinks the economy is doing "alright" due to "the auto companies not laying
off during a slump in sales". I think that this is flawed because 1) the
economy is more than the auto industry 2)several auto plants have closed in
the recent past 3) GM is reportedly "giving away" an average of $2500 per
vehicle in incentives & this (incentives + low prices) has prompted much of
the buying and 4)only idiots would go full steam ahead when no one is buying
their products. I also know that government "numbers" can be manipulated to
serve political ends, so I discount them appropriately. Not to mention that
if the SecTreasury would have said "Yeah, the economy's in the crapper and
we are powerless to do anything." he would probably be out of a job.

As the economy has soured, so does the incumbent president, and I think that
this is why Bush does not want to talk about the economy and would rather
discuss a baseless and boundless war. Let us not forget his dad made the
comments upon the minimum wage law "who makes the minimum wage anyhow" and
that a family of four could live well on $10,000 / yr. A classic example of
a president out of touch with the commoners, something I think Bush the
Younger has inherited.

During the 70's the upper echelon of car companies thought that US cars were
ok - this because a group of mechanics would go over the executives cars
almost daily. The aftermath was of course the takeover of the US market by
the Japanese. I am sure if the car execs would have driven the pieces of
crap produced then their ideas of quality would have been radically
different. As for our financial leaders, well, it is hard to deal with
reality when a Secret Service limo whisks you to work and the only contact
with non-government folks is with the CEO's of major banks, so I don't see
much chance of change until the next elections.

I guess the bottom line is to actively take part in the political process to
what ever extent one deems possible.
