On a related note, does anyone know if the "Dazzle Digital Video
Creator 80" device works with linux. This is a usb device that
apparently converts RCA(?) and S-Video input, sort of like an external
capture card.

For what it's worth, I get the following messages with Gentoo 1.4:
Oct 16 13:20:40 [kernel]       bLength             =    7
Oct 16 13:20:40 [/sbin/hotplug] arguments (usb) env (PWD=/etc/hotplug
DEVICE=/proc/bus/usb/001/004 INTERFACE=0/0/0 ACTION=add DEBUG=kernel
OLDPWD=/ DEVFS=/proc/bus/usb TYPE=0/0/0 SHLVL=1 HOME=/
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin PRODUCT=7d0/4/100 _=/usr/bin/env)
Oct 16 13:20:40 [/sbin/hotplug] invoke /etc/hotplug/usb.agent ()
Oct 16 13:20:43 [/etc/hotplug/usb.agent] ... no modules for USB
product 7d0/4/100

Thanks,
