[ale] mobile conectivity

I don't think the various types and qualities of speakers and microphones in
telephones (especially pay phones) are capable of passing the audio
bandwidth required for 56k. Remember, 56k downloads are only possible
because of the direct digital connection that the ISP has at their end.
Reducing the connection at your end from direct copper to literally
over-the-air is putting a significant dent in the pipe. In any case, you're
definitely going to be stuck back under Shannon's Limit of the theoretical
bandwidth of a voice channel.
Consider yourself lucky that an acoustic coupler can do better than 300
baud...

hey guys, i was interested in using my laptop in public places where a
wall jack isnt allways available, any suggestions? I was looking for
acoustic couplers but found only the "Koupler" from some company, noticing
its anorexic 26k, i looked for perhaps a newer technology. i didnt find
anything tho. Altho for what im doing while away a 26k connection isnt
bad, its not like im gonna dl mp3s or anything. I was hopeing for a build
it yourself kit for a coupler or device that allowed me to gain internet
access through a 56k modem.
thanks.
