[ale] blue border, X, and Compaq Armada laptop

I have a Compaq Armada 1550DMT laptop that I've wiped of RH and installed
Debian on.  Now when I start X I get a 640x480 screen centered on the
monitor with a big blue ugly 1 1/2" border around the edge.

I had another compaq laptop with this same problem, and I solved it
somehow, but it was over a year ago and for the life of me I can't
remember.

Can anyone provide the answer?
