[ale] screensaver creeps but CPU 98% idle & 16MB of ram vacant......

Greetings !
 
Under RedHat7.2, with 192MB of RAM and a 450mhz 
CPU, top shows that the CPU is 98% idle and that 16MB of ram are not being used 
and 260MB of swap are free............
 
but, xscreensaver creeps along jerkily. 

 
This was not formerly the case [don't know what's 
changed].
 
I've tried changing winmgr from sawfish to twm and 
wmaker, but no improvement.
 
I don't care about the effect, just the 
cause.
