[ale] Forcing hidden files/folders to stay hidden

        Hidden files in *NIX are only hidden by convention.  There's
nothing in the OS that's going to stop someone from accessing a file
they have permissions for just because it begins with a `.' character.


        Of course one might could do some trickery with LD_PRELOAD and
a munged version of readdir(), but that would only stop casual
browsing and not the determined (and borders on the kludgy).
