[ale] Installfest Success / Internet Connection

Yes. The Installfest was a great success (especially for me). I was able to:
play midis, wav with sound card that lacked midi sequencer
get DVD player working http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/index.shtml
peer to peer filesharing with gnutella
get cakewalk "like" sequencing for Linux
get numlock default ON
I would like to thank the half dozen people that helped with my box, and the
people who took the time to organize and host the Installfest.
Some of the problems were "tough" but there was no problem that went
unsolved. What's more is my computer came home in working condition this time
- well except one thing.
I installed RedHat 7.2 on Saturday morning (includes using the "update
agent"). I had an Internet connection working well through a LAN card (AT&T
broadband).
Took the box to the Installfest and connected it to the LAN. Used the
Internet connection well at the Installfest. Downloaded programs, etc. When I
brought the box back home . . . . the Internet connection no longer works.
I CAN ping my router/firewall. I can ping my own machine using an alias,
hostname or IP. I can use the Internet connection through my other installs
(extra Hard disks that slide in through a hard drive rack). It is not a
hardware problem.
The problem is that I cannot ping yahoo.com, or ping other machines on my
network anymore. I cannot browse the Internet. No browsers, ftp, ssh, or
email programs work anymore. The bad thing is that I cannot transfer the 27M
of files to my other machines (so that I can install the new goodies using
the same files and techniques).
I played with the /etc/hosts and other configuration editors (like the ones
in the GUI) until the LAN card would not come up during boot. Then I fixed it
back to the point were I was when I got home. I tried a bunch of man -k to
find out what is responsible for Internet connection, and failed to figure
out the problem.
Microsoft taught me to keep my Installs short, and when something like this
happens - simply re-install. However, my "test drive" took me 3 hours to
install (update agent went slow because of the Internet connection). I want
to get out of the habit of reinstalling for every little problem. I want to
learn how to fix the problem more directly.
Does anyone know what I need to do to get Internet connectivity (and local
connectivity beyond the hub) working? Is it possible for the LAN at the
Installfest to reconfigure my Internet connection, just by connecting to it?
If so, how? Is there a package I can uninstall and install again that is in
charge of the Internet connection only?
