Most "gimme the works" Linux distro installs seem to run up to about 1GB,
most of it going under /usr. Â If the SuSE install offers to make defaults,
you probably won't go too far wrong if you let it. Â At a minimum, the sparsest
scheme you should use is a ~10MB /boot partition, a 2xRAM swap partition
(in your case, 1GB), and the remainder going to /. Â 

What I would recommend, though, is going beyond this and deciding in what
top-level directory your data (FTP and WWW content, document files, etc.)
will live in. Â This is generally going to be under /var or /home. Â I know
that RH does or did automatically place its Apache and wu-ftpd root directories
under /home, which is also where your "home" directory will appear (the one
named after your non-root username). Â So, what you might wind up with could
look like

10MB - /boot
4GB - / (plenty of growth room)
1GB - swap (2.4 kernels don't have a 127MB limit)
~53GB (basically, whatever's left) - /home

IIRC, SuSE intended /opt to be where user-installed software went - at least
that's how it seemed when I used to run it a while back.

Since you have only the one drive and I don't expect that you're needing
to maximize speed at all costs, you aren't going to be gaining very much
by chopping it up any finer than that. Â In fact, there's a bit of a liability
in that once you've thrown your partitions down and done an install, you're
fairly well stuck and you'll be gnashing teeth if you bump up against your
partition boundaries, especially during an install.

I am installing SuSE 7.3 for Saturdays install fest.
  Do I allow it to install the default or should I customize it?
  I do know how to customize it if needed.
  I plan on having a internet server including http, www, ftp, sendmail
and fetchmail.  I will have a separate
server for a firewall.

  It is a 900MHZ coppermine chip with almost 500MB ddr ram with dvd
