It depends on what you want to share the modem for.  Since you mentioned 
faxing you should check out hylafax, I understand it provides such 
functionality, although I've never used it for such purposes.  It 
wouldn't be that difficult to put together a web based fax interface either.

Another place to look is http://www.linuxdoc.org/  You'l find links to 
many other hardware specific sites depending on the services you're 
trying to use.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
