[ale] user authentication?

ok so on desktops mostlikely youll want to run win2k for reasons of
security, maybe winxp and on servers you would want the most scrapped down
linux to make it more secure, less entrypoints. so i got the sql server
coverd, the file shareing, the email, and the website, any other points a
company might want? gennerally speaking? my MAIN question thats been
bugging me is, how do you authenticate a user on a windoze machine?
validate them to use your network? theres some kind of service linux does
with windows that makes them log onto the network right??? i know windoze
has it so im sure a linux guru did it too... what service is that? we dont
want any straggler poping his laptop on the lan  and accessing the files.
and with static he can just plug random ip's in till he hits gold.
