We may be straying a bit from the original problem. The settings in 
the preferences section should be working. Make sure you play with 
both the variable-width and the fixed-width settings. Also make sure 
that you check the radio button below it labelled something similar to:

"Use my default fonts, overriding document-specific fonts"

That way, you prevent a web page from changing your font to 
6-point dingbat through its markup. :)
