[ale] X libraries error

In trying to resolve the pixelation problems on my
laptop, I dropped back from X 4.1.0 to X 3.3.6.  

After successfully compiling the source (approx 6
hours on a 120 mhz...sheesh) and installing it I get
the following error:

xinit: error while loading shared libraries:
libXmu.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such
file or directory

libXmu.so.6 is there in /usr/X11R6/lib...so I'm not
sure what's missing here.  Does anyone know what
settings I need to change?
