[ale] gentoo install errors

Stephen -

I got further than you did (once I got a new CD-ROM drive that the mobo 
could boot to and could read a CD-R), but one of the mount commands 
referred to a target that didn't exist (in what I understood to be an 
optional section of the install) and then the scripts/bootstrap.sh step 
failed with errors all the way down.  I don't know if I have the 
patience to go through all this again or not; if I don't, I'll try 
Sorceror and if I can't get anywhere with that (X under Debian already 
stumped me), it's back to RH with me.  I was hoping to try something 
different on this box.
