I use
/boot 100Mb or greater
/var 400Mb or greater
/tmp 200Mb or greater
/root 150Mb or greater
/usr 6-10Gb
/opt make a symlink in /usr
/home is balance of drive
This is alot of work up front and can be alleviated by using
/boot 100Mb
/root balance of drive space
Second is real easy! :-)
Actually, to be serious for a minute or two, you can tune the partition
layout so that you have enough space to do what you need but protect
your machine from runaway logging or processes. The first scheme is a
layout that really comparmentalizes print jobs and logging into fixed
partitions. But with such large drives now, I am not sure what benefit
you really get from all the work. It sure is nice to just run update
scripts like Yast2's Online Update without wondering if your /var
partition is large enough!
