I think it's fair to say that the Apple II with VisiCalc was the first to 
show people that there was a practical use for microcomputers.

I recall the engineering types buying those and doing calculations 
at their desk, rather than go thru the hassle of justifying a team of 
programmers to write something for the mainframe.  Something that 
would cost a small fortune, and take half a year to complete (since 
the programmers were not structural engineers).

Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't all the rest (TRS-80, etc) come after that?
