Hmm, I have been on a PERL kick as of late

#!/usr/bin/perl

$logfile="/var/log/auth.log";
$exp="something";

open(LOGFILE,"tail -f $logfile|") || die "Could not open $logfile $!\n";
while(<LOGFILE>)
{
     if(/$exp/)
     {
         print("Found $exp\n");
     }
}
