Apparently you can use the freedt library to connect semi-natively from php..  

http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mssql.php

read all the user comments, some of them are quite detailed and go into exactly what your looking to do.

Unfortunately, the bridge linked to from unixodbc.org that supports SQL
Server costs $850.00.  I need something a little more free or low cost
;-).
