Of course there's also x2x and x2vnc which do similar things
without requiring a special shim on the client side (well, you can use
x0rfbserver to make an X server look like a VNC server for purposes of
the latter which I guess would count as a special shim but that's not
the point).
Before I reinstalled OS 9 on the iMac I had three desktops
worth of screen all controlled from the same keyboard. Now I'm back
constrained to just two piddling 1280x1024 screens (because x2vnc
doesn't want to talk to the Mac VNC server I found).
