[ale] DSL Router for Bellsouth

Bellsouth uses PPPoE but what I have noticed
is that your initial login should be <A
href="mailto:username at bellsouth.net">username at bellsouth.net.Â
After a couple of weeks, it changes to just your
username. I have had to go back and change the login name to keep the
connection alive.Â
Â
Officially, they don't support the router, they
will give you a web site to go to that tells you the same thing.Â
Â
However, if you can't get connected, what good is a
web site?

Jeff,We elected for ethernet based DSL modems that are
physically separate from the computer. Â Makes life a lot easier when
setting up the equipment. Â I know that there is a company now with a PCI
DSL modem specifically for Linux cause I saw the ad in either Sysadmin or
Linux Format magazine. Â Sorry I can't remember the name of the
company! :-[ You can
probably purchase an external ethernet based DSL modem pretty cheap.
However, doesn't Bellsouth do PPPoA instead of PPPoE?  Or is that
location dependent in their network? Â I just don't know enough here to
help you.DowJeff Layton wrote:

A hardened Linux install running Roaring Penguin is a real blessing in
the long run since you have a more versatile OS controlling your
connection. We use a hardened Slackware install from Fly-By-Day
Consulting. We have about 4 boxes at researcher's homes. Never a
problem and lots of logging/notification capability available.
I hate to bug you more, but do you know if any of them are using
the PCI DSL modem? (I don't have the USB modem :)
Thanks!
Jeff
Roaring Penguin is a breeze to use on Earthlink DSL.

Good morning,
I'm currently connected to Bellsouth DSL on a Windows box
that is set up for ICS so I can connect my Linux box. It's a real
pain to configure ICS so I'd like to switch to a DSL router
(wireless is unncessary). What recommendations do people
have? I'd like one with a firewall to add some more protection
(all the boxes run firewalls of some type). Any opinions on that?
TIA!
Jeff
