that's not really the other hand-- i wasn't disagreeing at all with what
you say.  the bs i was referring to isn't the free-for-all nature of the
network.  the bs is the fact that someone can register #linux and know
nothing about the topic-- they can do nothing for the channel and keep it
forever.  a user with no knowledge and no resources should not be able to
'own' a channel.  for that reason, i actually *like* the survival of the
fittest notion that efnet embodies.  if a user cannot get ops/bots/users
in their channel, who says they should be the owners of the channel?  who
says the channel should be owned at all?  weak channels will fall and the
strong ones will prevail-- it's natural.  just look at economics; we frown
on communism don't we?  there's a reason-- competition invites improvement
and the network as a whole, so the theory goes, will benefit from the
most capable users holding and using the resources.

of course this opens the opportunity for some abuse and a moderate amount
of obnoxious behavior, but it's rare for most channels on efnet.  certain
channels [#hackers, #bots, etc.] are much more prone to takeover attempts.
i don't think most channels on the network are coveted like that.

this is just my perspective and i wouldn't expect most people to agree
with it-- in fact, by the heavy demand for nazi-bots on irc networks, i
can only assume most people completely will disagree with me.
