[ale] linux friendly cheep hardware...

A serial interface (presumably with a powersupply circuit, although I do
not know for sure) can be baught from Jameco and probably others.  Just
do a web search for "Serial LCD Backpack".  Scott edwards electronics I
think has them too (www.seetron.com I think).
