[ale] TimeSys (embedded) Linux not finding '/etc/hosts'

ALErs -

I'm setting up an Ampro embedded processor card with TimeSys
GPL/Linux. (This is very similar to their download for the Motorola
'sandpoint' architecture.) Most works fine except the network driver
doesn't seem to check '/etc/hosts', and thus can't find 'localhost' by
name. Naturally a lot of stuff uses that.

I can open or 'ping' another host by IP or by name, but 'ping localhost'
brings an 'unknown host' whine.

Many network parameters seem to be set in '/etc/network/interfaces'. I
sort of 'winged' that and can telnet in and out. There is an
'/etc/network/options' that I haven't touched yet.

Routes seem to be set up by '/etc/gateways' which I have not met before,
and which I have left vacant. I suppose this could be the problem, but
don't know quite how to use it.

Any suggestions? Is there a Linux distro which uses this constellation of
files to set up the network access, and which might have some docs I
could check?

Thanks.
 - John Mills
