So named when Andreas Bechtolsheim came up with a way to build powerful
workstations from relatively off-the-shelf components for use within the
Stanford University Network (SUN). I'm unsure at what point Scott McNealy
and Bill Joy got involved (though I know Andy was getting his Ph. D. in EE
and Scott getting his MBA from Stanford, and Bill Joy was hacking on BSD
on
his way to a Ph. D. at Cal-Berkeley), but those three went on to found Sun
Microsystems.
