No, actually it says that the i686 tarballs require a real pentium.. the
ix86 tarballs do not.
Cant' find the reference at the moment, but I know I read it only earlier
today. Checked the mirrors, and there are ix86 platform paks for any
version. Maybe this solves your problem?

Yeah, small caveat I guess to a great distro. I tried to install on a
K6-233 and chroot would segfault on me.
