Hi Julia,
In addition to the other excellent suggestions (get a book - read man pages
and how-to's), one thing I wholeheartedly suggest... do a few installations
of Gentoo Linux (www.gentoo.org). It is time consuming (everything builds
from source), *especially* on an older computer, but well worth it in terms
of both learning experience *and* performance.
I learned more in 3 days of installing Gentoo than I did in 1 year of
playing when I had a chance.
