Assume that you don't have anything for either user, why don't
delete this problematic user 'trouble1', then rename the new user 'good1'
to be 'trouble1'.

userdel trouble1
usermod -l trouble1 good1
passwd trouble1 (change pass for trouble1, otherwise it will carry good1's pass)
mv /home/trouble1 /home/trouble1.broken ( in case you want to study it further)
mv /home/good1 /home/trouble1

yes .gnome will be created if none exists already.

#Jerry,

#I forced the reinstall of the gnome rpm packages. I logged on as another
#user
#and it worked for that new user.
#
#Now, should I just copy the .gnome directory from that successful user to
#the
#/home/root directory? Would that work? Or should I just delete the
#.gnome
#directory in /home/root? (Perhaps if the directory is missing, it will
#create a
#new one?)

#Thanks,
