With some difficulty I got INNd to the point where it will get mail,
but I get the following error message after starting innd:
"innd  dead but subsys locked"
Sounds as if when you start innd from a rc script that innd has
died prematurely and forgot to remove its nameplate.
Look in the logfiles for your error messages.

As long as you do not want to run innd you will have a configuration problem.
Stop and then start using your rc script.
