To answer myself:
grep'ed /etc/init.d for fstab
kudzu runs /usr/sbin/updfstab which edits the fstab for removable
devices. It pulls them out if they are not present. Since the device
_is_ present, there is a bug in the USB/SCSI reporting or a bug in the
kudzu report-reading code.
