[ale] boot cd?

well i was going to make my own boot cd, install a
distro and just burn it over, but the cd i want to use
is 185 meg 3" cd. how do you get a good portion of a
linux os on such a small space? like toms rootboot?
maybe ill just use that,  i was going to hopefully run
apt-get and emerge off one cd. would these programs
work under any distro? i know this is an odd question,
i appreciate any help i recieve :)
