Sorry to hear of your woes. It does sound like the mobo is toasted.
for some strange reason, RH has both ipchains and iptables, but defaults
to using ipchains. All you need to do is remove the
/etc/sysconfig/ipchains file and setup a comparable iptable-save file in
/etc/sysconfig and the init will run iptables instead.
Also by default, linuxconf is not installed. But it is on the
distribution CD set. It requires ncurses, I think.
