[ale] linux's flavor of remote validation?

Mark -

I just use the Samba shares on my file server from Linux boxes using 
mount -t smbfs, etc., etc..  I type the necessary commandage at boot 
time so I don't have a password stored on my own box, which isn't that 
big a deal since I rarely reboot (44 days up at the moment).  

One nice thing I noticed is that when I've navigated down my tree into 
the Samba share mount point, if I do a large mv or cp, I've noticed that 
the files do not fly over the network, i.e., the movement only takes 
place on the file server.  My Windows clients actually pull and push the 
stuff over Ethernet.
