Pet project?  UNIX at AT&T was used in telecommunication network 
switches (3b20).  At the time, Bell Labs was very much like a 
University, doing a lot of research.  Sad that this seems to have changed.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
