Thanks for your response.  

If I try to mount the partition on a running system it works fine.  

The kernel the server is using is 2.4.8 and the client is booting a 2.4.8 client.  Both the client and server 
are using nfs version 3.  The nfs utils are from the RedHat RPM and is version 0.3.1-5.
