First thing first! Upgrade to woody immediately!
2.2 too old for anything. Once you on woody you 
will have firewire.
And I suggest compiling yourself a custom kernel
after the upgrade using kernelpackage (make-kpkg)
and your trouble should go away.

Just installed 2.2_v3 and want to install a 'Firewire' HD.

What are the steps ?

I have tried the patch [error complaining about /bin/ed] and CVSd the
code to create the module [make err->Rules.make] and am at a loss.
