I have some quick & dirty Java code which handles SMTP in the raw. Port it
to your preferred language or just fix it up with some command-line
arguments and wrap it in a shell script...
I put it online here: http://webpages.smyrnacable.net/krum/java.
Maybe I'll clean it up sometime if I get bored. Or if there's a demand.
Even one user. Anybody? :-)

Subject: [ale] simple smtp programmatic interface
Hello all,
I've been trying to find an easy way to send messages out from scripts and
the like, using my home ISP. I'd set up sendmail, except that seems like
overkill for this simple purpose. What I'd like to find is a simple,
command-line driven program that takes files and sends them to an SMTP
server.
TIA,
